On Tuesday, Novemer 17 at 2:30pm, Ms. Teresa Harris will be appearing at the Fletcher School to discuss the work performed by her organization, Human Rights USA, in furtherance of human rights law in the United States. 

 

The mission of Human Rights USA is to prevent torture and other major human rights abuses through litigation in U.S. courts.  The organization focuses on U.S. compliance with international human rights norms and gaining compliance through litigation.  Current focus is placed on protecting habeas corpus, securing accountability for major human rights violations, protecting regugees from gender-based violence and torture and addressing human rights concerns stemming from efforts to combat terrorism.

 

Prior to her current position as Executive Director of Human Rights, USA, Ms. Harris served as the Deputy and International Justice Project Director with Human Rights, USA, coordinating Amnesty International USA's Middle East Regional Action Network and work with the Florida Center for Survivors of Torture and organizations that serve regufees.  She received her J.D. from the American University Washington College of Law, where she was a Public Interest/Public Service Scholar, an editor of the Human Rights Brief and a member of the Center for Human Rights & Humanitarian Law Student Advisory Board.  Ms. Harris is a member of the Maryland Bar and limits her practice to proceedings before Federal courts and agencies.
